Gerhard Richter Cage P19-6
Gerhard Richter, one of the most renowned artists to emerge from post-war Germany, is celebrated for his prolific and diverse painting practice that has significantly influenced the contemporary art scene. Richter's work explores the intersection of photography and painting, producing figurative canvases based on found images as well as abstractions that incorporate photographic visual effects. Often working on a monumental scale, he has also created glass panels and stained glass windows. His technique frequently involves layering and erasure, which are central to his artistic approach.
Richter received his formal education at the Kunstakademie in Dresden and the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. His work has been exhibited extensively worldwide, including at prestigious institutions such as the Museum Barberini, the Serpentine Galleries, the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Tate Modern.
